Patent translation since 1997!

translation is like a puzzle

What do we translate?

We translate documents produced throughout the patent granting process, from filing an application to granting of a patent, as well as those produced during opposition and litigation. Thus, we provide

German - English patent translations,

German - Turkish patent translations,

English - Turkish patent translations, including

patent applications, mostly filed under the EPC and PCT systems,

priority documents,

observations,

search reports with any cited documents, written opinions and any replies thereto,

communications during the examination phase,

communications during the opposition phase,

documentation of litigation or revocation proceedings, as well as

license agreements.

Besides translating patent applications, we translate any technical and medical texts including academic texts, textbooks, etc.

Who are our translators?

The translators in our team are experienced full-time professionals, holding BS, MS, and/or PhD degrees in natural sciences, engineering, or medicine.

What makes the members of our team special is their passion for science and technology, and eagerness to follow and understand the scientific and technological developments.

Which subject matters do we translate?

On the basis of the background of our team, we properly deal with the subject matters in

chemicals and pharmaceuticals,

electricity,

mechanics and mechatronics, and

information technologies.

How do we work?

After signing a non-disclosure agreement, we process your document according to the scheme below, such that the document is made ready-to-submit to the relevant authority. Including the processing of any drawings, this means that we adapt your document to the formal requirements of the relevant authority.

Patero → Cloud → Translator → Layout Editor → Proofreader/Editor → Back to Translator → Patero QC →

What kind of software and technologies do we use?

Since time is a key factor in translation services, efficient use of time benefits both the service provider and the client.

With this fact in mind, we have always kept up with cutting edge software and technologies to combine with patent translations, some of which are given below for information purposes only:

SDL Trados for computer-assisted translation,

Adobe Creative Cloud and Corel, OpenSCAD and LibreCAD for graphical editing and drawing,

Microsoft 365 for general purposes,

Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform for generating and managing our neural machine translation (NMT) models and databases,

ABBYY for optical character recognition and document organization.

What is our perspective on patent translation?

Apart from misspellings or typing errors in translation, which can have a significant impact on the outcome of a patent application and may even alter the scope of protection, there are other challenges that a translator encounters when translating a patent application.

More precisely, since a word can have a variety of meanings depending on the context in which it is used, understanding the relevant context becomes crucial in arriving at the correct interpretation. In translation, this applies not only to the source language, but also to the target language(s). Therefore, an accurate translation requires selecting the correct match between contextual meanings in both languages.

But what if one of the languages lacks such a word or even such a context, as is frequently the case in science and technology? This is one of the challenges typically faced when translating patent applications, which, by definition, involve "novelty" and "inventive step", and may therefore include novel and inventive designations and definitions.

Another linguistic challenge in patent applications is the inherent intention to keep the description as broad as possible and to avoid the use of precise and intuitive terms, in contrast to scientific papers, which aim to be as precise as possible. As mentioned above, this may result in the use of "novel" and "inventive" terms which, even when searched in specialized dictionaries, may yield no results in search engines other than the document in which they appear.

Never forgetting that an incorrect translation of a patent application filed under an international system such as the EPC or PCT can alter its scope of protection or even lead to its revocation in a contracting state, we handle each project with due diligence to ensure an accurate and acceptable translation. As noted above, particularly in the case of novel or rare subject matters and their components, this often requires considerable effort on the part of the translator, including searching various databases and, where necessary, consulting a person skilled in the relevant art.

Finally, bearing in mind that all stages of the patenting process, including the submission of translations, are subject to time constraints, we strictly adhere to the deadlines of all projects undertaken by our team.

What advantages do we offer?

Specialist translation

Your document is assigned to a translator based on its subject matter. This ensures that it is handled by a translator with a relevant educational background or, at the very least, the ability to understand the subject matter.

Cost reduction

Thanks to computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, you are charged only for the content that needs to be translated. This means that repetitions in a document, as well as any 100% matches from a translation memory assigned to you, are not charged. This is particularly beneficial for high-volume patent applications from the same proprietor, where certain sections are identical across multiple successive filings.

Additionally, being served directly by a translation provider will eventually reduce your patent translation costs.

Dedicated translators

You will work with the same translator or team of translators. This means you are not assigned anonymous or one-time translators, as we prefer long-term collaboration.

Consistent translations

You benefit from consistent translations through our translation memories and termbases, built from our work dating back to 1997.

Ready for submission

Your patent application, including any figures, is delivered in the format required by the relevant authority for submission.

Our limitations.

Limited output

In our view, translation is not an activity that can be subjected to mass production. Therefore, we keep our workload at a manageable level and do not sacrifice quality to increase output. This naturally limits our capacity.

No all-language service

We do not provide services in all languages, but focus only on German, English, and Turkish to maintain full control over our work.

No filing service

We are involved only in the preparation of patent applications and are not part of the patenting process. In other words, we are not patent attorneys and therefore cannot validate your applications in Turkey. However, upon request, we can connect you with our associate patent attorneys so that you can obtain national phase services in Turkey and have your application validated through a single point of contact.
